Guide: In-Ear Headphones

Guide: In-Ear høretelefoner

For many, in-ear headphones are the preferred way to listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks on the go or during workouts. Are you looking to buy your first pair of in-ear headphones? Or maybe your old headphones need to be replaced with wireless in-ear ones?

In this guide, we have gathered all the most important things you should focus on when buying in-ear headphones.

First: why choose in-ear headphones at all?

  • In-ear headphones are ideal if you enjoy running, working out, or walking with sound in your ears, but still want a lightweight headphone.
  • They are also an obvious choice if you like your headphones to block out the world, as in-ear headphones often shield your ear canals from external noise.
  • Additionally, in-ear headphones are excellent if you engage in exercise and movement that requires great freedom of movement, as they fit snugly in the ear.

Let's now go through the things you should be aware of before buying in-ear headphones.

WIRELESS OR NOT?

In-ear headphones share the common feature of being placed in the ear canal during use. But beyond that, there can be many differences. For example, whether they are wireless or not.
Therefore, when looking for headphones, you should consider whether you want your headphones with or without a cord. Wireless headphones have the particular advantage that you can move without restrictions and simultaneously have your phone outside the cord's range.

FIT

When you're looking for new in-ear headphones, the fit is crucial. Because every ear is different – and on long runs or sweaty workouts, it's important that the headphone fits perfectly. Nobody wants sore ear canals or headphones that fall out while moving.
Regarding fit, there are several considerations you need to make:

  • Do you want an ear hook around the ear, around the head, or no hook at all?
  • Should your headphone cover the entire ear canal?
  • Do you prefer silicone or foam ear tips? And what size?

To ensure the best possible fit, we at MIIEGO have made a number of active choices regarding our in-ear headphones. For example, we have decided that all our models come with four different sets of ear tips. One set in unique moldable memory foam that adapts to the ear canal, and no less than three sets in silicone. The silicone ear tips come in three different sizes, so you are guaranteed to find the right size no matter what. This way, you get an in-ear headphone that stays put without causing discomfort or tired ear canals.

WITH OR WITHOUT AN EAR HOOK?

Regarding fit, as mentioned above, it is important to decide whether you want in-ear headphones with or without an ear hook. This again largely depends on personal preferences.
With wireless headphones that sit in the ear without an ear hook, you get a discreet headphone that can easily be taken to training, but which you can also wear in everyday life.

If you choose in-ear headphones with an ear hook, there are several parameters you should be aware of. Does the hook fit your ear? Is the hook made of a comfortable material that you can wear? Is the hook designed to stay securely in place?

Our MiiBUDS ACTIVE GO comes with a soft and comfortable ear hook that ensures both a secure fit and a comfortable fit over many hours. Nothing feels tight here – and you don't have to worry about losing your earbud.

SOUND

Let’s face it. Sound is, of course, also a crucial factor in choosing new headphones.
Here, it is particularly a good idea to investigate the quality of the audio components the headphones contain. Do they provide crystal clear sound? Can they still play powerful bass? And is the treble sharp enough for the melody to cut through?
These are all things you should check before buying wireless in-ear headphones.

WATERPROOFNESS

It might not be your first thought to check if your in-ear headphones for running or training are waterproof. But it can actually have an enormous impact on both your experience of the headphones in use and their overall lifespan.
If you use your wireless headphones in a gym, sweat will most likely occur. And if you run with them outdoors, the Danish weather with rain and sleet is also potentially a factor.
For this reason, before purchasing, you should check if the headphones are IPX-certified. An IPX certification indicates that the headphones have been tested for resistance to water and sweat.
All MIIEGO's in-ear headphones are at least IPX-5 certified, and some are directly waterproof - for example, our waterproof headphones MiiBUDS ACTIVE GO.

BATTERY LIFE

There's nothing more frustrating than setting off on a run with music in your ears, only for the headphones to quickly signal a low battery. For the same reason, it's worth checking the battery life of in-ear headphones when buying new wireless audio.

FEATURES

Finally, you need to consider which features are important to you when using your in-ear headphones.
Do you run and want to avoid taking your phone out of your pocket when you want to change songs? Then choose headphones that allow you to change tracks or adjust the volume directly on the headphones themselves. Do you want to be able to take calls while exercising or walking with your headphones? Then go for in-ear headphones with a built-in microphone so you can communicate clearly – even on your running route!
